Chapter Eleven

Half-listening to Allie’s Aunt Marge drone on over whether the waitress with the blonde hair and big boobs had given her the evil eye, Quinn realized that, though she’d been to her fair share of funerals, she’d been to only a handful of weddings. “That girl had a definite attitude. I know attitude when I see it. All I asked her to do was turn down the air conditioning in here before we all froze to death. Did you see that look she gave me?”

“Yes, dear.” For his part, Allie’s Uncle Barney seemed resigned to his fate and gave the occasional affirmative response as he absently piled tuna salad on top of crackers.

As she thought on it some more, she finally settled on the number three. Her older sister Erin’s elaborate wedding, the Las Vegas wedding chapel ceremony of her college roommate, and the on-post wedding of one of the Lieutenants in her squadron just before they shipped out to Afghanistan the first time. While the last two had required very little effort on her part, Erin’s wedding had a week-long, tortuous exercise filled with lace and pink taffeta.

“What do you think Quinn?”

It took a moment for Quinn to realize that Aunt Marge was asking her opinion on something, although for the life of her she had no idea what. Quinn raised up in the seat and looked over at the elderly woman with big hair and a sparkling sequined blue blouse.

“I’m sorry, what?” she asked.

“Allie,” the woman said, chewing on dip-covered potato chip.

Quinn glanced to Uncle Barney for help. He shrugged and shook his head, apparently as lost as she was.

“What about Allie?”

“Does she have any prospects?”

“Prospects for what?” Quinn looked at Uncle Barney again. In response he handed her a tuna salad cracker.

“You know, prospects. I figured that you’re a friend of hers, that you would know.”

“Uh, well…I don’t know that we’re that good friends,” she said nibbling on the cracker. Not bad, she thought and reached for another from Uncle Barney’s outstretched hand.

“Surely you must have some idea of whether or not she has some prospect of a man out there. As pretty as she is, there has got to be somebody.”

Quinn swallowed hard on the bite of tuna salad she was eating and reached for the glass of Diet Coke on the table in front of her, coughing slightly.

“I really don’t know,” she said. Quinn glanced across the ballroom until her eyes fell on Allie, lined up by the stage next to three other women and her sister Taylor. They were getting directions from the perky wedding coordinator dressed in a white shirt and pink pants that were a size too small on what they were to do during the ceremony on Saturday.

“Well, she’s not getting any younger,” Aunt Marge continued, dipping another chip into the French onion dip.

“I don’t think she’s into men, Marge,” Uncle Barney said, speaking for the first time. Quinn snapped her head back towards the gruff voice and then accepted another tuna cracker from the man with overly black hair and a Member’s Only jacket.
